El Paso was the last of eight cities chosen for the 2023 Copita Alianza & Ford Golazo grant. Thousands of soccer players and their families gathered at the Westside Soccer Complex for the tournament. An activation team from Greater Texas FDAF brought semi-trucks filled with tents, cars and staff to help surprise a student with a $5,000 grant. The Ford Golazo Grants are awarded to deserving student-athletes.
Jimmy Dick and Estela Casas presented Franklin High School soccer player Rocio Nordquist with a special scarf and backpack that included the $5,000 grant. Rocio is a junior at Franklin High school and says she will save the grant to help pay for college costs next year. Soccer enthusiasts also took pictures with professional soccer player Maria Sanchez with the Houston Dash and Mexican National Soccer team.
Ford Copita Alianza is the largest Hispanic youth tournament in the U. S. with more than 700 teams participating. More than 3,000 athletes participated in the El Paso Tournament.
